The Problem
You plug in your RTL8812AU adapter. You run iwconfig. Nothing appears.
This is normal. Unlike the AR9271, the RTL8812AU doesn’t have a built-in Linux driver. You need to install it manually.
This guide shows you how — and how to fix the most common errors.
Method 1: Install from Kali Repository (Easiest)
Kali Linux includes a DKMS package for the RTL8812AU driver.
sudo apt update sudo apt install realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms sudo reboot
After rebooting, check:
iwconfig
You should see a new wireless interface.
Method 2: Install from Source (If Repository Fails)
If the package above doesn’t work, install directly from the aircrack-ng repository:
sudo apt install git dkms git clone https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au cd rtl8812au sudo make dkms_install sudo modprobe 8812au
Verify:
iwconfig
Common Errors and Fixes
Error 1: “No wireless interface found after install”
Cause: The driver didn’t load.
Fix:
sudo modprobe 8812au
If that fails, check if the module exists:
lsmod | grep 8812au
If nothing shows, reinstall the driver.
Error 2: “Adapter stopped working after kernel update”
Cause: DKMS didn’t rebuild the module for the new kernel.
Fix:
sudo dkms status sudo dkms reinstall rtl8812au/5.6.4.2
Or simply reinstall:
sudo apt install --reinstall realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms sudo reboot
Error 3: “Monitor mode works but injection fails”
Cause: NetworkManager is interfering.
Fix:
sudo airmon-ng check kill sudo airmon-ng start wlan0 sudo aireplay-ng --test wlan0mon
Error 4: “Driver installs but adapter not detected”
Cause: USB port issue or faulty adapter.
Fix:
- Try a different USB port (preferably USB 3.0)
- Avoid USB hubs
- Test on another computer to rule out hardware failure
Quick Fix Reference
| Error | Fix |
|---|---|
| No interface after install | sudo modprobe 8812au |
| Stopped after kernel update | sudo apt install --reinstall realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms |
| Injection fails | sudo airmon-ng check kill |
| Adapter not detected | Try different USB port, avoid hubs |
Verifying Everything Works
Once the driver is installed and the interface appears:
sudo airmon-ng start wlan0 sudo aireplay-ng --test wlan0mon
If you see Injection is working!, you’re done.
Conclusion
The RTL8812AU requires more setup than the AR9271, but once the driver is installed, it’s a capable dual-band adapter for pentesting.
